A lively cowboy town close to Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, Calgary has a lot to enjoy and is an exciting place to study English.

Located at the edge of the prairies where the foothills begin, Calgary is the centre of Canada’s oil industry and is an important centre of trade for the western provinces.

Many people come to Calgary as a point of access for the Rocky Mountain resort towns of Banff and Jasper, but there is so much to do in the City for students.

The summers are hot and sunny and the winters are very cold, but the snow doesn’t stop the fun! When it’s freezing outside, Calgary is a great place for winter festivals, skiing, snowboarding and other activities.

In summer you can check out the Calgary Stampede, a world famous fair and rodeo. The entire city comes to life during this festival, and you can join in the old-fashioned cowboy fun with chuck wagon races, pancake breakfasts, rodeo events, midway rides, musical performances and more.

Popular things to do for students learning English in Calgary

Prince’s Island Park is a great place to spend some time on a sunny day. It has many great trails for relaxing and walking. It is also home to many of the festivals that happen throughout the year in Calgary, including the Calgary Folk Music Festival and Shakespeare in the Park.

The Calgary Tower is one of the most iconic structures of the city. Although not quite as tall as the CN Tower in Toronto, it still offers a breath-taking view from the top. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Rocky Mountains, and there’s a revolving restaurant too.

Calgary is home to Canada’s third largest Chinatown, a great neighbourhood to explore with many excellent restaurants and interesting little shops. And don’t forget to check out the Glenbow Museum, which is the largest museum in Western Canada and has great displays about local history.

The Calgary Zoo is a world-class attraction and is home to more than 1,000 animals from all over the world. It also has a prehistoric park and a botanical garden.

Calgary hosted the 1988 Winter Olympic Games, and you can still take a tour of the site, and visit the top of the ski jump for an impressive view and an idea of what that winter sport feels like! Athletes continue to use these facilities for training at both summer sports and winter sports, and lessons and equipment rentals are also available. There’s a museum on site as well as the Canada Sports Hall of Fame and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, so plenty to explore!
