Toronto is the capital of the state of Ontario as well as Canada’s financial capital and largest city. It is a relatively modern city, originating in the 18th century, and has a 29-mile shoreline border on the picturesque Lake Ontario. Toronto is defined by its diversity and multiculturalism - one in two Torontonians was born somewhere else – and this translates into ethnic pockets that can be found across the city.

Students learning English in Toronto not only experience traditional Canadian culture, but also many different international flavours, whether eating out or walking from one district to another.
The cityscape is dominated by skyscrapers, with over 2000 buildings that are over 90 metres tall - only New York has more tall buildings in North America. The most prominent landmark in Toronto is the CN Tower, which for 30 years was the world’s tallest free-standing structure at 553.33 metres and is a must-see for visitors and where thrill-seekers can take a hands-free walk on an outside ledge with Edgewalk. The tower is also home to Ripley’s Aquarium.
Other well-known attractions include the Royal Ontario Museum, Hockey Hall of Fame and Toronto Zoo, one of the largest in the world.
Endless activities to enjoy for students
The Distillery District is a popular pedestrian area with shops, galleries, bars and small breweries.
Toronto also has many parks and squares, some with public ice-skating rinks, while Lake Ontario offers walks, boating and island visits. Take a ferry out to the Toronto Islands and walk, cycle and picnic or visit Centreville, a 14-acre theme park.
Sport lovers should make a trip to the Air Canada Centre, one of Canada's leading sports and entertainment venues and home to the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club, Toronto Raptors Basketball Club and many restaurants and bars.
The fun never stops in Toronto
Toronto's nightlife is diverse, with something for every age group in hot spots across the city.
There’s a hub around the Theater District, but many Torontonians opt for smaller local scenes in Queen West and Ossington Avenue.
The Toronto Entertainment District in Downtown Toronto is concentrated around King Street West between University Avenue and Spadina Avenue. It is home to theatres and performing arts centres, as well as many cultural and family attractions.
Toronto also offers an easy escape from the crowd, with leafy ravines and Canada’s winelands within easy reach, and the famous Niagara Falls just 75 miles southeast of the city.
With so much on offer, Toronto is understandably one of Canada’s top destinations for English language study.
