Explore Galway as you study

At the centre of Galway is 18th-century Eyre Square, a popular place to meet, surrounded by shops and traditional pubs. From here you can explore stone-clad cafes, boutiques and art galleries along the narrow lanes of the Latin Quarter, where you’ll also find remains of the medieval city walls.

The weekends in Galway come alive with live music gigs, festivals and parties. The Irish really know how to enjoy themselves, so you’ll have plenty of unforgettable nights out in this exciting city. If you want to experience an Irish traditional session, head to Monroe’s Tavern in the heart of the city where you can join in for a jig.

For history buffs there is the Galway City Museum, giving a fascinating glimpse into the past. It has an interesting exhibit about medieval Galway as well as displays about Galway and the Wars of Empire, and admission is free.

Visit the towering Galway Cathedral with its curved arches and gigantic dome: its stunning mix of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture will take your breath away.

A walking tour offered by the Galway Civic Trust, which takes in some of the most important medieval sites and buildings, such as the Hall of the Red Earl, Eyre Square and Lynch’s Castle, is a great way to see Galway’s most iconic sites and learn about the history of the city.

Foodies will love Sheridan’s Cheesemongers, a deli offering a range of local and international cheeses.

Take the narrow flight of stairs to the tasting room where you can sample from an extensive wine list and pair your wine with scrumptious cheeses.

One of the loveliest places to take a walk is Salthill Promenade, right beside IALC’s English language school in Galway. It winds along the coast and offers stunning views of Galway Bay and the hills of County Clare. Grab an ice cream at one of the lovely little cafes and indulge in a little people-watching for a while.
