The second largest island in the Maltese archipelago, Gozo is known for its scenic rolling hills and countryside. It has been inhabited since 5000 BC, when farmers from Sicily crossed over the sea and arrived on the island.
In myth, Gozo is thought to be the legendary Calypso’s isle mentioned in Homer’s Odyssey. Calypso is a nymph with great supernatural powers, and she casts a love spell over Odysseus, holding him captive for many years before releasing him. You’ll probably fall deeply in love with this island and not want to leave either.

Gozo is less developed than the main island of Malta and there is a lot of natural, rural beauty to explore here. Check out the Azure Window, which is a geologic stone arch that formed many millions of years ago after the collapse of a limestone cave. There are many beaches on the island and Gozo is considered one of the best diving spots in the Mediterranean. One of the most popular dive sites is the Blue Hole, where you can see some impressive underwater geography.
Make sure that you visit the stunning Ggantija temples, which are some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. The name means “belonging to the giants” and the local folklore states that they were built by giants.
Gozo is peaceful and relaxed, with a ruggedly gorgeous coastline and a green countryside dotted with old stone farmhouses. It is also home to one of the best preserved prehistoric temples in Malta, Ggantija. Gozo is also a great place to enjoy superb cuisine and a great night out.

Visit the village of Nadur, which is the largest village on the island. It has two Watch Towers and a very interesting Maritime Museum, as well as some lovely sandy beaches including Dahlet Qorrot and San Blas.
A convenient and easy way to get around is the Hop On Hop Off Bus. It is a great way to see all of Gozo in a day. The tour starts in the harbor of Mgarr and you can get off at any point along the way as the bus travels around the popular places of interest throughout the island.

One of the finest beaches on Gozo is Ramla il-Hamra,which has surreal-looking red sand. This is also the site of Calypso’s cave, as described in the Odyssey.
Gozo is a lovely place for an English course, whether you come in summer or at a quieter time of year. Enjoy al fresco dining on the waterfront, slow country walks and a range of water sports. And while in Gozo, make sure that you try the local cheese. It is called Gbejniet and it’s delicious when cured with vinegar and pepper!
