Bristol is one of the most attractive university cities in the south of England. It is an important business centre in the South West region and is culturally vibrant, with a very wide selection of theatre, visual arts, and live music. Its centre includes major stores as well as speciality shopping, as Bristol has a strong creative community as well. It has green spaces and beautiful countryside within easy reach. There’s lots to see and do in Bristol!
It’s hard to be bored in Bristol. The music scene is fantastic, with great clubs and pubs offering live gigs every night of the week. There is a thriving reggae scene, and with two universities and a strong economy, Bristol offers plenty of chances to make new friends outside classes.
Bristol is at the centre of the National Cycle Network and a great way to explore the city is to hire a bike and go for a ride along the many bike paths and routes. Take some time to visit the M Shed, a social history museum that tells the story of Bristol and its people. Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is also worth investigating. It houses a diverse collection from ancient artworks to sea dinosaurs!
The Bristol Zoo Gardens are home to one of the oldest zoos in the world and a fascinating collection of creatures from all over the world – a legacy of Bristol’s maritime history. The Blue Reef Aquarium offers a glimpse into the underwater gardens of the Mediterranean and the tropics, with everything from puffer fish to seahorses and sharks.
The city’s most famous landmark is the Clifton Suspension Bridge, a 19th century bridge that spans the Avon Gorge at a height of 75m. Take a walk over it or enjoy a beer at a nearby pub and admire dramatic views of the gorge.
Street artist Banksy is believed to have been born in Bristol, and you can take part in a walking tour to see his famous works in the city.
Exploring the area around Bristol
From Bristol, which has its own airport and a fast train link to London, you can explore many other beautiful locations in England, or even visit Wales. It is only a 15-minute train journey to the historic city of Bath, famous for its Roman ruins, Regency architecture, and spas. The cathedral at Wells is just an hour by road. The Cotswolds and the Mendips, two beautiful and scenic tourist destinations in the UK, are also within easy reach.
