The city of Portsmouth lies on the English south coast in the county of Hampshire. It has been an important naval port for centuries and will appeal to anyone with an interest in history as well as military and boating enthusiasts.
There are many fascinating museums devoted to these subjects; the D-day Museum, and the Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum to name a few. The world’s oldest dry dock is located in Portsmouth and is still in use today.
Rich boat history
Portsmouth is home to several famous ships, perhaps the most famous of which are Lord Nelson’s HMS Victory and Henry VIII’s flagship vessel, the Mary Rose. Salvaged from the seabed in 1982, the Mary Rose reopened to the public in spring 2013 after its restoration in a new museum.
The new boat-shaped Mary Rose museum has been built around the hull of the ship, once the favourite vessel of Henry VIII, and features tiered galleries showing reconstructions of life on board, as well as more than 19,000 artefacts, including personal items, and even the skeleton of the ship’s dog, Hatch.
For modern day sailors there are excellent facilities at Port Solent marina, with its mix of shops, restaurants, bars, and boats. But there's more to Portsmouth than boats and history, as the many students taking English courses discover.
Take a stroll around the cobbled streets of the area known as the Point and explore the old pubs, climb Henry V’s Round Tower and wander along the fort’s walls to the 15th century Square Tower.

The city has excellent shopping as well as a thriving nightlife of cinemas, theatres, restaurants, pubs, and bars. Portsmouth has a lively music scene with a full programme of classical, rock, pop, folk and opera, in larger venues such as the Guildhall and the Pyramids Centre, to more intimate pub settings.
With flat routes and many designated cycle lanes, Portsmouth is the ideal place to explore by bike. Follow the waterfront trails or explore the city’s history on one of nine themed trails. The city also plays host to many running events for beginners and seasoned runners alike. Or take a harbour tour and see this great naval city from the sea.
A short walk from the city centre lies four miles of beach and the Southsea Common, perfect for coastal walks. The Common also plays host to various outdoor activities including a kite festival, running events and live music.
