The seaside town of Worthing on England’s south coast is a wonderful base for an English course in the UK.
Worthing has had the nickname “Sunny Worthing” since the 19th century, thanks to its south-east location and microclimate. It’s a lovely coastal town with a promenade, a pier, and several seaside parks.
In recent years the town, which is close to the beautiful South Downs National Park, has been revitalised as a tourist destination – the famous Dome Cinema has been restored and the area around Splash Point has been revived, with a swimming and leisure centre. Worthing has become a popular destination for arts and culture and is also home to the famous Worthing Birdman event in August, which draws tens of thousands of spectators to watch people dressed in winged costumes attempting to fly off the end of the pier into the sea!

- Worthing began as a fishing hamlet and developed into a popular Georgian seaside resort. A quintessential Worthing experience is a leisurely stroll or cycle ride along the seafront promenade.
- If you love culture and history, visit the free Museum and Art Gallery where you will find one of the finest collections of Victorian costumes in the country. It also has fascinating archaeology exhibits that include artefacts from the nearby South Downs, as well many excellent temporary exhibitions.
- If you venture out a little further, the beautiful South Downs National Park has lots of open space for cycling, kite-flying, walking and more. You could also take a ride on the coastal cycle trail, which will take you along the seafront on a lovely journey from George V Avenue all the way to Lancing and Shoreham. On another day, take a walk up to Cissbury Ring, one of the most impressive hill forts from the Iron Age in England.
- Worthing’s pedestrianised Montague Street is home to a weekly Wednesday market and there are some lovely boutiques to explore, too. Worthing has pretty Georgian, Regency and art deco inspired architecture, and everything – sea, shops, entertainment - is within a compact, walkable area.
- Worthing has plenty of traditional English pubs and trendy bars and is an excellent place for theatre: there are several venues offering superb productions. The Connaught Theatre often shows visiting plays and musicals from London’s West End and the Pavilion Theatre offers a range of excellent shows, from general entertainment to children’s shows and more. The Assembly Hall is always hosting innovative and unique concerts and has excellent acoustics.
Excursions from Worthing
It’s easy to explore the surrounding countryside and nearby towns. Arundel, only 11 miles west of Worthing, is famous for its cathedral, castle, and fascinating history. Brighton is a popular UK seaside city with a dazzling nightlife and lots to see on a day trip: visit the beautiful Royal Pavilion, or shop in quirky jewellery stores in The Lanes. And London is just over an hour away via train.
