Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the capital city of Argentina and a popular destination for students learning Spanish. The city lies on the Atlantic coast and has been a major port and trading point for many centuries.

This generated great wealth for the city and the foreign influence is reflected in much of its architecture, a mixture of Colonial, Art Deco, French and Neo-Gothic buildings. Buenos Aires is sometimes referred to as the “Paris of South America”. It has many theatres and museums and was the birthplace of Tango music and dance, which in the early 20th century spread across the world.

A popular attraction is the Cemeterio de la Recoleta where visitors can trace history amongst the impressive statues and sarcophagi of past presidents, heroes, and politicians, including Evita’s grave.

Public transport is good and getting around is easy. The wide avenues that are a feature of the city and the many “plazas” (squares) are filled with pavement cafes, bars and bistros. The most notable historical sites are around the Plaza de Mayo, though there are places of interest in San Telmo, La Boca and other districts.

Walking around the riverfront area of Puerto Madero and spending leisurely time in Recoleta and Palermo are both rewarding activities. Find a traditional restaurant and enjoy a smooth local Malbec wine with a world-renowned grilled Argentinean steak: a perfect combination.

Buenos Aires has a night scene to rival any world city, with bars, clubs and live music venues teaming with people virtually every night of the week through to the early hours.

The city’s coastal location offers a great escape to beaches, bays and resorts including San Bernardo, Pinamar, Santa Teresita and the larger Mar del Plata, another popular night spot. The marshy Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve has become a favourite weekend destination for walkers, cyclists and wildlife watchers, with over 200 species of birds.

Sports lovers will be in their element - Argentines like to play and watch sport.

Buenos Aires has two leading football teams, Boca Juniors and River Plate, whose rivalry is on a par with Real Madrid and Barcelona. Argentina also has a strong affiliation with horses, so catch a local horse race or a polo match at the Campo Argentino de Polo.
