A beautiful city to explore

Bordeaux city

Since its founding by Celtic tribes, Bordeaux has grown to span 18 kilometres from its majestic boulevards to the banks of the Garonne river.

For a relaxing day, stroll the graceful 18th century streets and visit Saint-Andre Cathedral, enjoying a classic French bistro lunch along the way. Or take cycle ride along the river and picnic at one of Bordeaux’s beautiful parks.

In the evening, explore the bars and clubs of the St Pierre district or down on the Quai Paludate strip. The city known as “Sleeping Beauty” comes awake at night!

There’s no bad time to visit Bordeaux: it’s a city with year-round attractions, mild autumns and winters and plenty of sunshine!

Bordeaux's historical sites and museums

Bordeaux vineyards

There are many sights in Bordeaux, amongst them the Porte Cailhau, Pey Berland’s Bell Tower, Rohan Palace, the Grosse Cloche, the Place de la Bourse with its ‘water mirror’, and the Opera House.

The city has eleven museums, seven of them municipally owned, with rich collections of fine and contemporary arts, design, archaeology, and regional history. The Musee Aquitaine is one of the largest French history museums outside Paris.

Also, worth a look is the Saint Seurin Basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Bordeaux’s oldest church, with an 11th century crypt. And take a river cruise on the Garonne and see the city by boat.

Enjoy Bordeaux’s exquisite cuisine

Bordeaux wine

A favourite Bordeaux experience is a weekend morning enjoying oysters and white wine from one of the seafood stands at the atmospheric Marché des Capucins and, as this region is the home of wine, there are regular excursions to vineyards – our French language school in Bordeaux offers its own courses combining French with oenology.

The elegant Chartrons district is worth a visit as the centre of the city’s wine trade and the location of its excellent museum of modern art.

Among the other highlights outside the city is Arcachon's Bay, a world of multiple landscapes: oyster ports, sandy beaches, pine forests and the highest sand dune in Europe.
