Taormina

Today Taormina has become one of the most popular destinations in the world. Start your exploration at the ancient Greek theatre constructed in the 3^rd century BC. It is without a question, the most important feature amongst the architecture there. The Greek theatre of Taormina has a splendid view of the Calabrian coast, the Ionian coast of Sicily and the spectacular cone of Etna. The public gardens of Taormina offer a beautiful view of the town. This villa is draped with luscious greenery, populated with palm trees, cacti, and flowers, during the summer will take your breath away. Duomo, the Cathedral of Taormina, was constructed in the 13^th century on the ruins of the church dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari. Appearance edging towards a more fortress-like structure than a religious institution. Although Taormina in size is considered a small town, the historic centre feels like a well-to-do hill village turned into a resort with a glossy sheen of glamour. Exploring the historic centre can take several hours, if you are looking around shops and studios, stopping at a cafe, buying ice cream, and admiring views. 

Picturesque alleys and staircases above and below the Corso are interesting to explore, while if you want to stretch your legs further there are attractive walks up into the hills, or down to the sea. Given its compact size, Taormina has a huge range of bars, cafes, and restaurants where you can while away pleasant hours while admiring the views. Shops sell everything from cheap souvenirs to high-end jewellery. Taormina has a good choice of restaurants. When it comes to public transportation, Taormina has you covered from buses, trams, cable cars and beach buses.

As gelato is to Italy, granita is to Sicily. Consisting of sugar, thin flakes of ice and various flavourings made of crushed fresh fruit, this Sicilian drink/dessert is served in every café, bar and gelateria on the island. But there is more to the Sicilian cuisine in Taormina. For instance, the Arabs introduced aubergines and rice. The French and Spanish refined raw ingredients and were gifted with a Mediterranean stew. An honourable mention of the staple ingredient in Sicilian dishes, pasta.
